CIS ATC took part in UNOCT regional workshop for East Africa


A representative of CIS ATC took part in the Regional workshop for East Africa on “Countering terrorist use of improvised explosive devices and small arms and light weapons” organized by the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and funded by the Russian Federation, in Nairobi, Kenya on September 12-14, 2023.

The event was attended by over 60 representatives of the African states, including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, UN institutions (UNOCT, Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, Nations Department of Peace Operations, Mine Action Service, Office for Disarmament Affairs, Regional Center for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, Office on Drugs and Crime) and international organizations (International Civil Aviation, INTERPOL, World Customs Organization, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and Regional Center on Small Arms).

The workshop was aimed to increase awareness of threats posed by terrorist use these types of weapons.

The participants inter alia were informed about:

the UNOCT efforts to support United Nations Member States in countering terrorist use of weapons;
countering terrorist use of unmanned aircraft systems, small arms and light weapons
threat of terrorist use of explosives in Sub-Saharan Africa and IED threat in East Africa;
effective implementation of Security Council resolution 2370 (2017) and other resolutions.

The CIS ATC’s representative made a presentation on topical issues of countering terrorist use of UAVs.
