CIS ATC DELEGATION PARTICIPATES IN THE UNOCT VIRTUAL COUNTER-TERRORISM WEEK

The UNOCT Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week on Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment was convened on 6 July 2020.

As agreed with the Chair of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev, the subject event is attended by the CIS Anti-Terrorism Center’s delegation led by the Center Head Colonel-General of Police Andrey Novikov.

In his opening remarks the UN Secretary General H.E. Mr. António Guterres stated that “it’s too early to fully assess the implication of COVID-19 on the terrorism landscape. But we know ISIL, Al-Qaeda, their regional affiliates as well as neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups seek to exploit divisions, local conflicts, governance failures and grievances to advance their objectives”.

Mr. Guterres called on strengthening multilateral cooperation, noted a need to monitor evolving terrorist threats and evolving trends, stressed the importance of promoting human rights while taking counter-terrorism measures.

The virtual counter-terrorism week includes 5 webinars, 4 interactive discussions and UNCCT Virtual Expo. It will conclude on 10 July 2020.
